    DAY 1: ARRIVAL/ARUSHA/TARANGIRE: L, D.

    Pick-up ex Arusha. Safari briefing and depart for Tarangire National Park. Arrive, check-in and lunch at your lodge. Afternoon game drives. Tarangire has an unusual and compelling landscape. Grassy savannah and woodlands, liberally dotted with ancient and massive Baobab trees give the park a slightly surreal or primeval aspect, especially when they have no leaves. The Tarangire river attracts migratory animals in large numbers and is an ideal place to see elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, hyena, giraffe, baboon, warthog and a wide variety of plains game, especially during the dry season Jul-Oct. There are over 300 species of bird in Tarangire and best time for bird watching here is December to May. Spend 1 night at your camp/Lodge on full board.

    DAY 2: LAKE MANYARA: B, L, D.

    Breakfast at the lodge. Depart for Lake Manyara National Park. Arrive, check-in and lunch at your camp/Logdge. Afternoon game drives. Lake Manyara National park is unique for its diverse and distinct Ecological zones ranging from the rocky Rift wall and ground water forest to woodland, open grassland, thermal springs and swamp. This diversity of habitat allows the visitor to see a wide variety of wildlife in a relatively small area. Look out for the rare tree-climbing Lions, monkeys galore in the tropical rain forest, hippo and flamingo around the lake and plenty of plains game grazing on the savannah. Afternoon exit and proceed for a tour of the Elephant caves and consequent nature walk. Spend 1 night on full board.

    DAY 3: NGORONGORO: B, L, D.

    Breakfast at the lodge. Depart for Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Arrive at the lodge. Check-in. Picnic lunch boxes will be provided. Descend into Ngorongoro Crater floor for game drives. A first glimpse of Ngorongoro leaves one literally breathless. Once a huge volcano, probably larger than Kilimanjaro, it is now a vast circular amphitheatre, spectacularly beautiful and a garden of Eden for huge numbers of wildlife. The animals are resident throughout the year and it is not difficult to find four of the "Big Five" elephant, lion, buffalo and rhino. Spotting leopard requires sharp eyes and a bit of luck! Centrepiece of the extensive floor is Crater lake with its pink mantle of Flamingo and other birdlife. Spend 1 night at the lodge/camp on full board.

    DAY 4: NGORONGORO/ARUSHA

    Breakfast at the lodge. Depart for Arusha. Arrive and lunch on own arrangements. Dropped off at your hotel/Residence within Arusha.

Lake Burunge Tented Camp is only a 20-minute drive away from Tarangire National Park. Lake Burunge Tented Camp consists of 20 Luxury Tents and 10 Lodge Rooms located in a shady bush land grove, with spectacular views onto Lake Burunge. Its main building offers a central lounge and bar/dining area built on a raised wooden deck. This elevated platform is the ideal venue for guests to relax and enjoy a sun downer whilst the sun disappears over the lake, or to simply sit and enjoy the warm fire place. Guest can enjoy the swimming pool before or after game drives. The characterful main building, with its thatched roof, provides a central lounge and bar/dining area built onto an elegant raised wooden deck with uninterrupted views of Lake Burunge. Animals such as zebra and elephant and spectacular birdlife can be seen from the veranda and in the evenings there's a camp fire. There is mobile phone reception and internet access (at additional cost) and a good-sized, infinity swimming pool which is well-positioned for wildlife-viewing. Activities include game-drives into the Tarangire National Park. Although there is no off-road driving permitted within the reserve, night drives are permitted in this area, as are walking safaris. Be aware that the camp's location outside of the National Park can mean some longer journeys to reach the main viewing areas. Note that tstse flies can be a menace at certain times of year but it's always possible to close vehicle windows during game-viewing to minimise irritation and nothing can really detract from the fantastic game viewing in the dry season. In particular, this is one of the best places in Tanzania to see elephants who congregate in huge numbers around the Tarangire River. A great variety of colourful birds are also to be seen, including the Paradise Whyder and Yellow-Collared Lovebirds, making this park a real draw for ornithologists. Lake Burunge Tented Camp is set in a large concession area dedicated to the conservation of the local Maasai people and cultural visits to their communities can be arranged.

Hidden among the kopjes in the Tarangire National Park lies Tarangire Sopa Lodge, surrounded by ancient baobab trees. The lodge is located on the eastern side of the Tarangire River opposite Tarangire Hill. The Tarangire National Park is 2,850 square km of remarkable beauty and rewarding game drives, and is on the traditional migration route. The Park is also home to the greatest concentration of elephants in Africa. Over 500 bird species can be spotted here as well. With water constantly available in the area, the greenery is lush providing a wonderful contrast to the burnt ground. The lodge is 30 km from the Park entrance gate, about an hour's drive through an area rich in wildlife. Located at the swimming pool, the Pool Bar is surrounded by a patio area and small sheltered umbrella areas, and is an ideal venue to relax around in between game activities. Masai village visits can also be arranged, as can bush dinners. Children are very welcome at the lodge, and babysitting services are available. There are 75 spacious rooms in total, all with a private lounge with a mini bar. Each room has 2 queen-size beds with a mosquito net around them.Ceiling fans keep the rooms cool and glass sliding doors open out onto a balcony, with a great view of the landscape beyond. The dining room is a spacious, light and airy room with an outside seating area which is ideal for BBQs and themed dinners.

While planning an East African Safari can seem like a daunting task, it doesn't have to be! Take the stress out of the experience with this helpful summary of the key things you need to think about before you jet off. Once you have all of them covered, you can sit back, relax, and look forward to your safari adventure.

Clothing

On an East African safari, you should go for comfort and convenience when it comes to your clothing. Some of the things you should remember, include:

  • Bring lightweight layers in both long and short lengths, plus socks, sleepwear, and swim wear.
  • Always take a sweater or fleece jacket, as it can get quite chilly at night and during early mornings.
  • Unless you're planning to trek, bulky hiking boots are rarely necessary. However, a comfortable pair of lightweight trainers are a must.
  • Don't forget a hat, as you'll want to protect your face and scalp from the equatorial sun.
  • It's not recommended to wear bright colors on safari, so consider buying some khaki, dark green, or darker colored clothes before your trip.

A full passport with at least six-month validity from the date of departure is generally required for travel. It is recommended that travelers contact the relevant Consulate/Embassy prior to travel for current visa requirements.

Applying for an East African Visa One of the greatest things to happen to East African tourism over the past few years is the introduction of the East African visa. This visa allows you access to Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda, and it’s not only a time saver, but it also works out considerably cheaper than purchasing individual visas.

To apply for the East African Visa, you’ll need the following: A passport with at least six months validity One standard sized passport photograph A completed application form Tip: It’s important that you apply for the East African visa with the country from which you will begin your travels. The visa will be valid for 90 days from the date marked in your passport.
